Breathing New Life Into
a Zundapp Combinette
1959
When I bought the moped it was in very poor condition and minus many parts. It took six months to totally rebuild, using only original parts sourced mainly from firma Tillmans in Germany. I only compromised by using stainless steel fasteners throughout to make it road legal. The frame, petrol tank and mudguards resprayed in the correct colours. Many parts have been rechromed and alloy yokes polished. I stripped down the engine and fitted new gasgets all new bearings, piston and cylinder head. New parts were sourced from Germany. Wheels were rebuilt using stainless steel spokes and fitted with original hubs. Total cost of the rebuild came to nearly 800 .

enclsosed final drive chain is just one of the practical feature of the Zundapp. Note the
planetary type gears and big bearings!

The Zundapp Combinette, with the look of a 'proper'
motorcycle.
Here you can see the result of my work. It doesn't to
be big to be stylish. The Zundapp Combinette is possessed of classic good looks.
It's no surprise the price of the Zundapp was high, as the quality of all
components is top notch. Magura levers are a case in point. Oozing quality and
Germanic style, the expensive Zundapps were built for hard use.

Compared to most Mopeds of the fifties, Zundapp Combinette stands out like a work of art. It has been a pleasure to be given and then to restore this Zundapp. I kept a careful record of the restoration and am amazed to see that I made over 100 parts, mostly in stainless steel.
Comfort may exceed performance but the Zundapp Combinette still makes an ideal machine for a leisurely spin on a fine Sunday.
