Above pictures shows the AWO RS racing bikes as derived from the touring version
in 1951. Engine was OHV, with hairpin valve spring. Bore and stroke was 68 x
68mm, giving 247 cc. The cylinder was light alloy with cast iron tube, intake valve
head diameter was 38 mm and exhaust 36 mm. Compression ratio 10:1 gave engine power
25 hp at 7500 rpm.

Above AWO RS 250/4. In -55 the engine got a new cylinder head
with two, chain driven over head camshafts, dry sump lubrication with a separate oil tank
and a new Sport AWO duplex steel tubular frame. Front brake was big and effective
single-leading shoe, and airscoop provide ventilation for the brakes. The bike
was now with Sport AWO swingarm rear suspension and a 30 mm
carburettor. The bike still had shaft drive. Power was now claimed as 30 hp at 9500
rpm.

Above AWO RS 250/5. In 1957 a completely new engine was
designed, and the bike was renamed to Simson. The crankshaft was now in the
lengthwise position, with a chain driven DOHC, primary chain drive to the gear box and
chain drive to the rear wheel, now definitely battery with coil ignition and twin spark
plugs, a new frame of chrom-molybden tube with leading-link forks and twin oil damped
shocks. Compare with AWO RS 250/5 and HONDA RC 160 racer.
Above left final version of single, with a bore and stroke of 70.25 x 64, gear wheel
driven DOHC, primary chain drive to the six speed gear box and chain final-drive, now
definitely battery with coil ignition and twin spark plugs, leading-link forks, and a
bigger 250 mm air vented front brake.

Above Pictures of Simson twin. End 1956 a new,
twin cylinder 250 was developed, with bore and stroke 56 x 50.6 (exactly the same as the
HONDA CB 250 twin), with DOHC, again chain driven. Primary drive was by gears to
the dry clutch and six-speed gear box. The engine gave 35 bhp at 10000 rpm.. Later the
drive to the cam shafts was changed to shaft and bevelgears to the inlet cam, and from
there with gear wheels to the exhaust cam shaft. The bike still had tubular spine
frame with leading-link forks. Single leading-shoe drum front brake was vented to
aid cooling.
