PERFORMANCE-SERIES ROOTS-BREATHING II 2002

I've spent 3x108 hours twining plaits in parks, streets and galleries in three Finnish cities. In October - November 2002 I flew to San Fransisco to perform in Marsh-theatre. There I told the stories that I had heard during my performance in Finland and the video "Threads", (filmed by Tuula Mehtonen), was projected on my white dress. People around Finland as well as in San Fransisco received me well. It seemed to be easy for them to find points in common with the way I work and their everyday life. People who came to see the performances on account of newspaper articles or were just passing by gave me the yarns. Along with the yarns they gave me stories. As I was twining, men and women - young, middle-aged, old - came to watch. They told me their own stories or commented on my twining, asking what I was doing. I worked with both hands to and fro adding one yarn or a group of yarns at a time, making new loops and unraveling the previous ones.
